Stigma and discrimination remain some of the greatest barriers to the well-being of people living with HIV/AIDS. Beyond the medical challenges, many individuals face social isolation, emotional distress, and limited economic opportunities. Recognizing the importance of community dialogue, UHDP organized a community engagement initiative designed to foster meaningful conversations with women living with HIV/AIDS and better understand the realities they face every day.
The main objective of the initiative was to engage with women living with HIV/AIDS and gain a deeper understanding of the challenges associated with the condition, particularly the effects of stigma and discrimination, while exploring more effective approaches to HIV prevention, awareness, education, and community support.
Key Issues Raised During the Discussions
The discussions revealed several areas where greater support is needed to improve the quality of life for women and young people in the community.
- One of the key priorities identified was economic empowerment. Participants emphasized the need for business development opportunities for women and youth to help them achieve financial independence. Entrepreneurship training, skills development, and access to sustainable livelihood opportunities were recognized as essential tools for reducing vulnerability and building resilience.
- Another significant concern was mental health, particularly among young people aged 20–33. Participants shared how HIV-related stigma continues to affect emotional and psychological well-being, highlighting the need for accessible mental health services and safe spaces where individuals can seek support without fear of discrimination.
The conversations also reinforced the importance of strengthening community awareness to reduce misconceptions about HIV. Participants stressed that education and open dialogue are essential in addressing stigma, promoting acceptance, and encouraging people to access prevention, testing, and treatment services.
Looking Ahead
This initiative reflects Universal Humanitarian Development's commitment to promoting dignity, inclusion, and empowerment for women living with HIV/AIDS. By listening to lived experiences and investing in sustainable solutions, UHDP continues to contribute to communities where stigma is replaced with understanding, hope, and opportunity.
